In this tutorial you will learn how to block ads on Android without root.
Throughout the last decade ads (especially after the introduction and growth of Google AdSense and Google AdWords) have become the main form of earning money for website owners and app developers. Ads turned out to be the best form of payment for tons of content these website owners and app developers give away for free.
Sometimes, however, ads are so intrusive and irritating that they almost make it impossible to make use of the free content the app or website gives. They also very often slow down the device and unnecessarily consume bandwidth (they need to load as well, after all).
Fortunately, you can easily get rid of these ads within a couple of minutes.
In today’s article I will show a few apps and ways to block ads on Android without root so that you won’t void your warranty. Let’s start!
Do I need to root my phone at first? Nope!
Rooting your Android phone will always give you the biggest control over your device and let you modify it in almost any way you like. This also applies to advanced ad blocking e.g. blocking ads displayed in apps.
The good news is that if you are a regular Android user (not a programming geek), you can do without rooting your phone and still block the most intrusive ads which you most often meet while simply browsing the web.
MobileGuru.LOL is the blog for regular Android users who want to make the most of their phones in the simplest and most effective ways. This is the approach I usually suggest and this is how we will tackle ad blocking, so don’t worry because no rooting is required.
All you need right now is you Android phone connected to the Internet and this very tutorial.
Adblock Browser for Android
If you are really into blocking all kinds of ads while browsing the Internet on your Android phone, you should start from downloading and installing Adblock Browser for Android. This browser was created by the people behind the most popular Chrome and Firefox extension known as Adblock Plus.
The main purpose of this browser is very simple: to let you browse the web just like you would do on your desktop computer with the Adblock Plus extension on.
- Fast and simple to use. I didn’t really notice much difference in comparison with using Chrome on my Android phone.
- It offers advanced ad blocking options, such as, disabling tracking, malware domains, anti-ad blocking messages, social media buttons or adding exceptions.
If you aren’t a great fan of Chrome or Firefox on Android, you should give this browser a try.

Free Adblocker Browser
Free Adblocker Browser is another alternative browser which lets you block ads on Android without root. Just like the one discussed above, Free Adblocker Browser was also created to let its users browse the web without ads and annoying popups.
- It blocks ads by default.
- It saves data and battery life because ads are blocked before they get downloaded.
- It protects you from tracking (i.e. collecting your data by advertisers).
- Unfortunately, in some cases it leaves the blank space where the ad should be (take a look at the screen from my own website below).

I have been using Chrome and Firefox for almost all of my life and I must admit this is the first time I have been playing with and testing Opera.
Some of my geek friends kept telling me that Opera is a great web browser for mobile phones because it uses much less data and has a built-in ad blocker which default Android browsers lack.
I must say this is indeed a great web browser. All you need to do to make use of its ad blocking functionality is enable Data savings and then make sure you check Block ads.
- Quick and easy to use.
- Offers significant data savings.

AppBrain Ad Detector
This app isn’t really about blocking ads, but about making you aware which apps on your phone contain ads and what kind of permissions they have. This information might help you eliminate potentially harmful apps.
Take a look at the screenshot below to see how the apps looks.

Surprise: Go Offline To Block Ads On Android Without Root
Blocking ads in apps is a more difficult task which in most cases requires you to root your phone.
However, if you don’t have to be constantly online and you use many offline apps, there is a very simple way to block ads on Android apps on your phone.
All you need to do is simply turn the internet off (both Wi-Fi and mobile data) and ads in apps will stop appearing. Of course, this solution works mostly in the case of informational apps or games which don’t require you to be connected to the Internet.
